Harley-Davidson Motorcycles Recalled for Brake DefectJuly 10, 2014 — Harley-Davidson is recalling 66,421 Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles from the 2014 model-year to fix potentially defective brakes that can lock up the front wheels without warning.

Five crashes and two minor injuries have been linked to the problem.

The recall affects motorcycles that were manufactured between July 1, 2013 and May 7, 2014, especially those equipped with ABS brakes. According to the recall:

“The affected motorcycles may have been assembled with the front brake line positioned so that it can be pinched between the fuel tank and frame causing the front brake fluid pressure to increase. A pinched brake line will increase the front brake fluid pressure, possibly resulting in a front wheel lock-up, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Harley began investigating the problem in September 2013 after learning of a pinched brake line under the fuel tank on a police motorcycle. In October, they determined that six complaints were potentially linked to the problem, including one crash with no injuries. One week later, corrective action was taken on the assembly line — a cable strap was added — and the investigation closed.

In May 2014, the investigation re-opened after a report of the brake line pinching in another location, a few inches forward. The company added another cable strap and linked the problem to 38 complaints, including four crashes and one injury. Another crash involving an injury was reported on May 20.

Harley-Davidson will notify owners about the problem. Dealerships will inspect the brake line for defects and replace damaged lines as necessary. They will also install one or two cable straps to prevent the line from being pinched in the future. Repairs will be done free or charge and they will begin in July 2014.
