May 1, 2019 — Grant Park Packing of Illinois has announced a voluntary recall for over 53,000 pounds of raw ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli.
Investigators with the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service are trying to determine whether the recalled ground beef is linked to an outbreak of E. coli O103 that has infected over 150 people in 10 states.
According to the recall announcement, “there is no definitive link between this positive product and the ongoing E. coli O103 outbreak.”
The recall involves the following ground beef items produced by Grant Park Packing on October 30, October 31, and November 1, 2018:
- 40-lb. bulk cardboard boxes of “North Star Imports & Sales, LLC. 100% GROUND BEEF BULK 80% LEAN/ 20% FAT” marked “FOR INSTITUTIONAL USE ONLY” with lot code GP.1051.18 and pack dates 10/30/2018, 10/31/2018, and 11/01/2018
The items are labeled with the establishment number “EST. 21781” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They shipped to Minnesota for further distribution and Kentucky for institutional use.
Consumers can avoid infection with E. coli by only eating ground beef that has been cooked to 160°F, as measured using a food thermometer that reads internal temperature.
Infections with E. coli O103 often cause severe diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. Most healthy adults recover within a week without needing medical treatment, but some victims develop a type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
