Ground Beef at Texas Meat Market Tests Positive for E. coli

December 6, 2022 — Ground beef sold at La Michoacana Meat Market in Greenville, Texas tested positive for E. coli, according to a warning from the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).

No recall was requested because the ground beef is no longer for sale, but it may still be in consumers’ homes or freezers.

The raw ground beef was ground in the store on November 28, sold to consumers in varying weights behind the meat counter, and wrapped in butcher paper between November 28 and December 1, 2022.

La Michoacana Meat Market is located at 5106 Wesley St., Greenville, Texas, 75402.

“The problem was discovered during routine FSIS product testing when a sample confirmed positive for the presence of E. coli O157:H7,” according to the recall notice.

E. coli O157:H7 is a bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning. The symptoms generally include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Some people develop a type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).

Ground beef is a recurrent source of E. coli outbreaks and recalls. The problem is that E. coli is commonly found in the intestines of cows, and when cattle are slaughtered and processed, the bacteria gets into the meat.

Another problem is that ground beef combines meat from many animals, which significantly increases the risk of E. coli contamination compared to a whole steak from a single animal.
