May 11, 2015 — Good Seed Inc. has issued a recall for all packages of soybean sprouts and mung bean sprouts because they may be contaminated with Listeria.
No illnesses have been reported. The contamination was discovered in samples tested by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and food safety officials.
The recall includes 1-lb, 2-lb, and 10-lb bags of sprouts in clear plastic bags labeled under the “Goodseed” brand. All of the products were produced on April 1, 2015.
The products were sold in Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and North Carolina.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, older adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems. According to the recall:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
Sprouts may have a reputation as one of the ultimate health food, but they are actually one of the most commonly-recalled food products. Since at least as early as 1995, sprouts have been recalled every year in the United States — and there are often multiple recalls per year.
Last year, an outbreak of Listeria linked to raw sprouts from Wholesome Soy Products Inc. caused at least five hospitalizations and two deaths in Illinois and Michigan.
The problem is that the warm, moist conditions that sprouts require to grow are also ideal for growing bacteria. Sprouts are also typically eaten raw, and it is difficult to grow “safe” sprouts. Unfortunately, eating even small quantities of contaminated sprouts can make a person very sick.
