April 12, 2017 — Nearly 150,000 garbage disposals were recalled after 22 reports of them shooting out pieces of metal and in some cases hitting people standing nearby.
No injuries were reported, but three people were hit by broken pieces of metal that came loose and were forcefully ejected out of the disposal.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall and warned:
“A metal component inside the disposal can break off and come out of the disposal during use, posing an impact hazard.”
The recall includes garbage disposals that were sold under a variety of brand-names: Barracuda, Franke, Frigidaire, Gemline, Kenmore, Kitcheneater, Luxart, Moen, Stream33, Waste King, and unbranded garbage disposals.
For a complete list of recalled disposals, visit www.DisposalSupport.com.
They were sold by Anaheim Manufacturing from December 2015 through March 2017 at stores like Best Buy, HD Supply, Menards, plumbing supply stores nationwide, and online for $80-$370 for ¾-horsepower models and $100-$450 for 1-horsepower models.
The manufacturer is asking consumers to stop using the garbage disposals and contact the company for a free replacement. The company will arrange for it to be installed at no cost to consumers.
