Peanut Butter Salmonella Recalls

In 2012, Trader Joe’s issued a recall for Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter after the products was linked to 42 cases of Salmonella in at least 18 states. The peanut butter was manufactured by Sunland, Inc.

One of the largest outbreaks of food poisoning in history was linked to peanuts from Peanut Corp. of America. Over 700 people were infected and 9 died from Salmonella between September 2008 and March 2009. Federal prosecutors brought criminal charges against the owners of the company for scheming to manufacture and sell peanuts they knew tested positive for Salmonella.

Salmonella Food Poisoning

Although Salmonella infection is not usually life-threatening, it can be fatal for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of infection typically include fever, diarrhea (may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can spread to the bloodstream and cause arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
