July 15, 2016 — A recall for the Flushmate® III Pressure-Assist flushing system has expanded to include even more exploding toilets.
Exploding toilets are no laughing matter. Flushmate has received over 300 reports of the toilets exploding, resulting in property damage and at least 14 injuries.
The recall expanded after Flushmate received two more reports of toilets exploding, resulting in property damage and one report of a minor injury.
The company has recalled about 453,000 Series 503 units that were made between July 2009 and April 2011. According to the recall:
“The system can burst at or near the vessel weld seam releasing stored pressure. This pressure can lift the tank lid and shatter the tank, posing impact and laceration hazards to
consumers and property damage.”
Previous recalls had already been issued for Flushmate toilets that were made from October 1997 through June 2009. The recalls were issued in January 2014 and June 2012.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Flushmate III systems, turn off the water supply to the units, flush the toilet to release the internal pressure, and contact the firm to request a free repair kit.
Around 2 million Flushmate systems were installed nationwide. In February 2014, the manufacturer paid $18 million to settle a class action lawsuit. One injured victim reported that his Flushmate system “exploded and severely cut my back.” He required dozens of stitches for an extremely deep cut from exploding porcelain.
