December 29, 2014 — The FDA is warning consumers not to use SLIM-K capsules or B-Lipo diet pills because they contain hidden ingredients with dangerous side effects.
Bethel Nutritional Consulting, Inc., recalled one lot of SLIM-K capsules after laboratory testing by the FDA discovered sibutramine, desmethylsibutramine, and phenolphthalein.
Sibutramine is an appetite-suppressant that was originally sold under the brand-name Meridia. It was pulled off the market in 2010 due to concern about cardiovascular side effects.
Phenolphthalein was an over-the-counter laxative that was pulled off the market due to concern about gastrointestinal side effects, irregular heartbeat, and cancer with long-term use.
Bethel has also recalled one lot of B-Lipo Capsules after the FDA found hidden lorcaserin.
Lorcaserin was recently approved by the FDA under the brand-name Belviq, the first prescription weight-loss pill in decades.
Like all medications, it can have serious side effects, including difficulty thinking, hallucinations, feelings of intense excitement, changes in blood-sugar and heart rate. More serious adverse events include heart valve damage and serotonin syndrome. The FDA warned:
“Excessive levels of serotonin can cause symptoms that range from mild (shivering and diarrhea) to severe (muscle stiffness, fever, and seizures). Severe serotonin syndrome can be fatal if not treated.”
