November 12, 2015 — The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) proposed limits on the amount of Roundup residue in food, but said the weed-killer was unlikely to cause cancer in humans.
The group proposed a daily limit of 0.5-milligrams of glyphosate per kilogram (kg) of body weight. They claim a 175 pound person could safely consume about 40-mg of glyphosate a day every day for their lifetime.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture does not routinely test food for Roundup residues.
Their conclusions may be used by European Union (EU) policymakers to decide whether to extend approval for glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, after this year.
Jose Tarazona, head of the EFSA’s Pesticides Unit, said, “This has been an exhaustive process — a full assessment that has taken into account a wealth of new studies and data.”
Monsanto welcomed the conclusions, which directly contradict those of the World Health Organization. In March, the WHO said glyphosate was a “probable human carcinogen.”
The conclusions of the WHO were based on an evaluation of studies going back decades, including three massive studies in Sweden, the United States, and Canada that found higher rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in agricultural workers exposed to Roundup.
Critics say much of the EFSA report was taken from studies commissioned by glyphosate manufacturers, including six animal studies that the WHO did not evaluate because they were not published.
Meanwhile, Monsanto filed a motion to dismiss lawsuits filed by plaintiffs Enrique Rubio and Yolanda Mendoza, two agricultural workers who developed cancer after years of exposure to Roundup. Monsanto argued that the claims should be barred by state and federal laws.
