B-Vitamins and Liver Damage

Energy drinks often contain very high doses of B-vitamins. Most people easily get enough B-vitamins in food. Higher amounts of these vitamins are simply excreted by the body in urine or stools. In very high doses, B-vitamins accumulate in the the liver and cause side effects. For example, niacin (Vitamin B3) can elevate liver enzyme levels in the blood. High doses are associated with sudden liver injury, which can be severe or deadly.

Energy Drinks and Toxic Hepatitis

Energy drinks have been associated with several reports of non-viral hepatitis (liver inflammation). This side effect, also known as toxic hepatitis, occurred at doses of niacin above 150mg per day for several weeks. Many energy drinks contain 20-40mg of niacin. One report involved a 50 year-old construction worker who drank 4-5 energy drinks per day for three weeks. The other report involved a 22-year old female who drank 10 energy drinks per day for two weeks.
