June 3, 2025 — Organic Rancher Ground Beef products sold nationwide at Whole Foods and other stores have been linked to an E. coli risk.
No illnesses were reported, but the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) warned people not to eat the products due to the risk of contamination with E. coli O157:H7, a Shiga-toxin producing strain of E. coli that can cause severe illnesses or even death.
The warning involves 1-pound vacuum-sealed packages of “Organic Rancher® Organic Ground Beef (85% LEAN 15% FAT)” with “Use or Freeze By 06-19-25” and “Use or Freeze By 06-20-25.”
These products were produced on May 22, 2025 and May 23, 2025, labeled with “Product of Australia or Uruguay,” with establishment number “EST. 4027” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
They were distributed to Whole Foods Market locations nationwide. They were also shipped to distributors in Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, and Maryland, where they may have been sent to other states.
Health officials are urging consumers about the risk of E. coli infections, which may cause severe food poisoning, dehydration due to nausea and vomiting, and other life-threatening complications:
“While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults.”
