E-Cigarettes and Bronchitis

There are over 7,000 types of flavored e-cigarettes and vaping liquids on the market. Many of them contain chemicals like diacetyl, which increases the risk of chronic bronchitis when it is routinely inhaled.

The toxicity of flavoring chemicals gained notoriety in the early 2000s, when hundreds of workers at microwave popcorn factories were diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans — nicknamed “Popcorn Lung” — a disease that causes inflammation of the small airways, wheezing, chronic cough, and shortness of breath.

Flavorings-Related Lung Disease

The illnesses were traced to flavoring chemicals used in butter-flavored popcorn. Those same chemicals are used in fruit flavors, candy flavors, and alcohol flavored e-cigarettes, which many are concerned could appeal to children.

In December 2015, researchers at Harvard warned that diacetyl and other high-risk flavoring chemicals can be found in most flavored e-cigarettes. They tested 51 sweet-flavored products and found diacetyl in 76% of them, in concentrations up to 4X the daily exposure limit.

According to David Christiani, co-author of the study:

“In addition to containing varying levels of the addictive substance nicotine, they also contain other cancer-causing chemicals, such as formaldehyde, and as our study shows, flavoring chemicals that can cause lung damage.”

What is Chronic Bronchitis?

Chronic bronchitis is a long-term inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which are airways that carry air into the lungs. It often occurs with emphysema, and together these diseases are called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Symptoms of Chronic Bronchitis

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness, discomfort, or pain
  • Low fever

Complications

When the lining of the bronchial tubes is always inflamed or irritated, viruses or bacteria can easily cause an infection like pneumonia. People who have chronic bronchitis tend to develop infections that last longer than normal and are harder to treat.

Treatment

People with chronic bronchitis may need to use an inhaler to take medicines to open the airway. They may also need to use oxygen therapy. These treatments can improve breathing, but for people who have severe bronchitis, the chance of a complete recovery is low.
