Texas Amusement Park Injury Lawyer

June 6, 2012 — According to a recent Orange County Register investigation, there have been 140 personal injury lawsuits against Disneyland theme parks in Anaheim, CA, since 2007. Most of the cases were dismissed or settled quickly outside of court for undisclosed sums of money. Around one-third were due to slips, trips, or falls.

The Register reported that the following personal injury cases were settled:

  • In Goofy’s Kitchen, at a Disneyland hotel, a woman slipped on eggs that were on the ground
  • At Disneyland, a man was injured after an employee poured hot coffee on his arm
  • At Knott’s Berry Farm, a man was injured when he sat on a bench and it rolled over
  • At Disneyland, a man was hurt when a sheet of metal allegedly flew off a snack stand and struck him

Nearly all the cases were dismissed or settled quickly out of court. A law professor told the Register that theme parks have a public-relations incentive to settle the cases quietly instead of risking a public trial.

There are relatively few examples of personal injury lawsuits against Disney that went to court. One involved a woman who suffered seizures after a food-court umbrella hit her in the head at Disneyland, and the company was forced to pay $500,000. Another trial verdict forced Disney to pay a woman $71,000 when she tripped on a curb and fractured her ankle.

The number of amusement park injury lawsuits is actually quite small, given the fact that around 25 million people visit theme parks every year. The lack of injuries is strong evidence that the parks are generally safe, and the park officials do a pretty good job of keeping their visitors safe and happy.

Sometimes, however, there are serious hazards at theme parks that can cause serious, life-threatening, or deadly injuries. When these injuries occur, the amusement park could be held responsible for neglecting to ensure the safety of the park visitors. If you were injured at an amusement park, you are not alone.
