June 5, 2015 — Glyphosate, the active ingredient in the weed-killer Roundup, has been declared a carcinogen (cancer-causing) chemical by Denmark’s Working Environmental Authority.
The announcement comes just weeks after the World Health Organization (WHO) re-classified Roundup as a “probable human carcinogen” and specifically warned about studies linking it to non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Denmark took the lead and banned spraying of Roundup in 2003 over concerns about groundwater contamination.
Since then, many countries have restricted non-commercial use of the herbicide, including Sri Lanka, Bermuda, El Salvador, Sweden, Brazil, Netherlands, Norway, Mexico, Russia, Tasmania, and India. Other countries are considering bans.
Many experts blamed the pesticide for increasing rates of chronic kidney disease in farming communities around the nation beginning in the mid-1990s.
The Institute of Science in Society (ISIS) talked to experts in Denmark who warned gardeners against using Roundup to control weeds:
“We know that glyphosate causes cancer in other mammals, but it has not been demonstrated in humans. That is because the effects are not investigated thoroughly enough in people yet. But when we see that other mammals get cancer from glyphosate, we must assume that people who are exposed to the substance can also develop cancer.”
In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) called Roundup a carcinogen 30 years ago. However, the agency reversed its decision six years later with no justification.
The manufacturer of Roundup, Monsanto, has transformed the agricultural landscape by pushing “Roundup Ready” crops that are genetically engineered (GMO) to resist the toxic herbicide. As a result, millions of acres of farmland are sprayed with the chemical every year.
