Lawsuits Claim Service Technician Spied on Dallas ADT Customers
On May 18, two federal lawsuits were filed against the home security company ADT after 220 customers in Texas learned that a service technician may have spied on them in their homes.
One lawsuit claims he spied on a teenager girl nearly 100 times. The breaches went on for 7 years, from 2013 through early 2020.
“Moments once believed to be private and inside the sanctity of the home are now voyeuristic entertainment for a third party. And worse, those moments could have been captured, shared with others, or even posted to the internet.”
What is the problem?
In March 2020, ADT was contacted by a customer in DeSoto, Texas, who reported an unauthorized email on their ADT Pulse app. When ADT investigated, they found a service technician’s personal email address linked to 220 accounts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
What Could He See?
When the technician installed security systems and added his email address, he could watch live video streams and for the customers’ in-home security cameras through the ADT Pulse app.
He could spy on customers naked, “in various states of undress” and during “moments of physical intimacy,” according to the lawsuits. He could also download videos and pictures, or upload them to the internet, but there is no evidence that he actually did.
How Has ADT Responded?
ADT immediately terminated the employee, revoked his unauthorized access, and reported him to law enforcement. On April 23, ADT contacted 220 Dallas-area customers to tell them about the breach. ADT also updated the ADT Pulse app to prevent technicians from exploiting it to spy on customers in the future.
