October 11, 2013 — Counterfeit OxyElite Pro may be responsible for a cluster of liver injuries in Hawaii. The manufacturer, USPLabs, has informed health officials that counterfeit products have been sold in the United States for “some time.”
Since at least 2010, message boards and blog posts on fitness-oriented websites report suspicions of fake OxyElite Pro, “bad batches,” and products with unusual side effects. Most reports were from disgruntled consumers who purchased products over the internet and felt no stimulant or appetite-suppressing effects.
Hawaii News Now reports that some users suspect counterfeit OxyElite Pro may be responsible for the epidemic. A personal trainer named Angel Adams used OxyElite Pro for years as a pre-workout energy-enhancer. Last month, Adams said she got a bad batch:
“She compared the new bottles with previous bottles she had and said the packaging was slightly altered. Then she opened the purple capsules and says she noticed a difference in the texture and taste of the powders. She believes counterfeit products could be what’s making people sick.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not investigating whether counterfeit OxyElite Pro is involved in the outbreak. They will inspect manufacturing facilities and obtained shipping records to see whether consumers purchased products made by USPLabs or a counterfeit manufacturer.
According to the FDA Drug Safety Communication:
“Because USPlabs LLC has informed FDA that it believes counterfeit versions of OxyElite Pro are being marketed in the US and have been on the US market for some time, FDA is also investigating whether counterfeit product is related to any of the cases of acute hepatitis.”
