Class Action Filed Over Samsung Washing Machine Explosions

September 28, 2016 — Samsung is warning that certain top-loading washing machines can explode and cause severe injuries or property damage.

An investigation revealed that 21 explosions have been reported since last year, according to ABC News.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said it is working with Samsung on a remedy to fix the problem. It only affects top-loading washing machines made between March 2011 and April 2016.

Samsung said “abnormal vibrations” could pose a risk of injury or property damage. Incidents primarily occurred when washing bulky items like bedding or water-resistant items on the high-speed spin cycle. In some cases, the top of the washer suddenly blew off.

Consumers to only use the delicate cycle when washing bulky items. There have been no reported incidents when using this cycle.

Last month, a class action lawsuit (PDF) was filed in New Jersey. Lawyers say a support rod in the washing machine is not strong enough to hold the tub in place and it can break loose during the spin cycle. The lead plaintiffs include:

• Michelle Fielder (Texas) — Placed a small load of laundry in her Samsung washing machine on February 9. It exploded with so much force that it penetrated the wall of her garage and into her living room.
• Suzann Moore (Indiana) — Used her Samsung washing machine on December 23, 2015. It violently exploded and damaged her dryer. Samsung refused to pay for the property damage.
• Melissa Thaxton (Georgia) — Her Samsung washing machine exploded like “a bomb went off” on April 8, when ti was on its final spin cycle. She was in the room removing clothes from the dryer, with her 4 year-old son nearby.

The class action lawsuit was filed on August 12 in the U.S. District Court for New Jersey — In Re: Moore, et al. v. Samsung Electronics — Case No. 2:16-cv-04966.
