Byetta Thyroid Cancer CausesRecent studies have indicated that  Byetta (exenatide) may cause thyroid cancer. The FDA has also asked drug-maker Amylin Pharmaceuticals to conduct 6 studies to investigate a potential link because they have received dozens of reports of thyroid cancer in Byetta patients.

Does Byetta Cause Thyroid Cancer?

No one knows for sure if Byetta causes thyroid cancer. However, there is enough evidence linking Byetta to thyroid cancer that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a Drug Safety Communication in October 2009. The FDA required Amylin Pharmaceuticals to conduct six post-marketing surveillance studies “to explore a potential signal of a serious risk of thyroid cancer and pancreatic cancer.”

Studies of Byetta and Thyroid Cancer

In July 2011, a study published in the journal Gastroenterology found that the GLP-1 drug class (including Byetta) “could have serious unintended and unpredicted side effects.” They reviewed the FDA database of adverse events from 2004 to 2009 and found that patients taking Byetta had an increased risk of thyroid cancer, based on about 30 reports in the FDA MedWatch reporting system. Although the FDA’s voluntary reporting system has limitations, it is a potential warning sign that warrants further research.

Thyroid Cancer Causes

Thyroid cancer occurs when cells in the thyroid gland undergo genetic mutations and start to grow and multiply very quickly. Over time, the accumulating cells form a mass of abnormal cells called a tumor. Without treatment, these cells can also spread to other tissues or organs.

Risk factors for developing thyroid cancer include:

  • Certain medications
  • Unusually high exposure to radiation to the head or neck, especially in early childhood
  • Genetics or family history
  • Asian ancestry
  • Being between age 25-65 years old
  • Goiters (enlarged thyroid) – either individual history or family history
  • Gender. About 3/4 of people who get thyroid cancer are female.
  • Some health conditions or diseases, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Cowden’s syndrome, thyroid adenoma, and familial adenomatous polyposis.
  • And more
