Byetta Kidney Failure SymptomsIndividuals who take Byetta (exenatide) to treat type-2 diabetes should be vigilant for symptoms of kidney failure, because dozens of life-threatening incidents have been reported. Symptoms of kidney failure often include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, changes in urine, weakness, confusion, and more. Byetta patients with these symptoms should be evaluated by a doctor right away.

Byetta and Kidney Failure

Byetta (exenatide) is an injectable type-2 diabetes medication that has been linked to at least 78 cases of kidney disease, including 62 cases of kidney failure and 4 deaths. Byetta kidney failure is life-threatening, and many people with the disease require hospitalization, dialysis, or a kidney transplant.

According to the FDA, common side effects of Byetta may contribute to kidney failure:

“Some of the 78 patients reported nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea — the most common side effects associated with Byetta in clinical trials. These side effects may have contributed to the development of altered kidney function in the reported cases.”

Acute kidney failure (or “renal insufficiency”) occurs when the kidneys stop working within less than 2 days. Normally, the kidneys remove wastes and excess fluid from the blood. They also balance salts, minerals, electrolytes, and fluids in the body. When the kidneys are not functioning, wastes and fluids can accumulate and cause life-threatening complications.

Byetta and Kidney Failure Symptoms

Sometimes, Byetta patients with kidney disease have no signs or symptoms for many years. Cases of kidney failure have been reported up to 2 years after a patient started taking Byetta, or as little as 3 days, according to the FDA. Sometimes, kidney damage is only diagnosed when the patient is tested for another medical condition.

Kidney failure symptoms may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy, fatigue, drowsiness
  • Muscle weakness, tingling, or decreased sensation
  • Confusion
  • Changes in urine (color, amount, frequency)
  • Bloody stools
  • Dehydration
  • Swelling in the extremities (feet, ankles)
  • High blood pressure
  • Nosebleeds
  • Muscle twitches or cramps, hand tremor
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Shortness of breath (if there is fluid in the lungs)
  • And more

Will My Symptoms Improve If I Stop Byetta?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published this Drug Safety Communication to report 78 incidents of kidney problems among Byetta patients. Of these patients, 63 people discontinued Byetta, but only 39 (50%) reported improved symptoms. These statistics raise serious concerns about the risk of long-term complications of kidney damage.
