January 8, 2016 — Blue Bell has reported discovering Listeria in their production facility, but said no ice cream has tested positive for the disease-causing bacteria.
In a statement, the company emphasized that it tests every single batch of ice cream for Listeria. Contamination in the facility was discovered during extensive environmental testing.
The company said its enhanced testing procedures are working, but it expects to find small indications of Listeria from time to time:
“Because Listeria is commonly found in the natural environment, no manufacturer can ever assume it can be entirely eradicated. … We have identified locations where suspected Listeria species may be present in our facility, and we continue to extensively clean and sanitize those areas.”
Blue Bell recalled all of their ice cream in April 2015 after receiving reports of 10 people who were infected with Listeria since 2010. Illnesses were reported in Arizona (1), Kansas (5), Oklahoma (1), and Texas (3).
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that consumers do not eat any recalled Blue Bell products, including ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet, and frozen snacks. Because the products can have a shelf life up to two years, it is possible that some consumers still have these products in their freezers.
