Betty Crocker Cake Mix Recalled Due to Possible E. ColiJuly 12, 2016 — General Mills has issued a recall for two flavors of Betty Crocker cake mix as part of a larger recall involving flour that may be contaminated with E. coli.

The outbreak has sickened at least 42 people in 21 states. No illnesses have been directly linked to Betty Crocker cake mix.

About half of the sickened people reported cooking with flour before getting sick. If you possess any of the recalled products, throw them away.

Products recalled in the United States include:

  • Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Party Rainbow Chip Cake Mix: A General Mills supplier used Wondra flour implicated in the July 1, 2016 recall to manufacture the flavor chips used in this recalled cake mix flavor.
  • Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix: A General Mills supplier used Wondra flour implicated in the July 1, 2016 recall to manufacture the flavor chips used in this recalled cake mix flavor.

A full list of recalled products can be found at www.generalmills.com/flour.

Most strains of E. coli are harmless, but a disease-causing strain known as E. coli O121 has been detected in samples of flour produced by General Mills.

People who eat raw batter, cookie dough, or uncooked flour can get severe food poisoning. Symptoms may not appear for up to 10 days, and may include bloody diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever, and dehydration.

Anyone who is diagnosed with E. coli should contact state and local public health officials. Click here for more information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
