Bella Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Claims Lid Fails to Lock

September 7, 2023 — Sensio Inc. has been sued by a woman who claims that she was burned by a defective Bella Pressure Cooker.

The lawsuit was filed by Christy F., a woman from Peoria, Arizona, who allegedly suffered “serious and substantial burn injuries” on August 9, 2021.

She claims that she was burned when she was able to easily open the lid on a pressurized Bella 8-Qt. Electric Pressure Cooker (Model M-80B30AG), as a result of the safety features failing to lock the lid.

Her lawsuit claims that Sensio Inc. misled consumers by advertising a locking lid and other safety features, with statements like, “When cooking under pressure, the lid is locked and cannot be opened once pressure is reached.”

Instead, she claims that the lid does not fully lock, allowing unsuspecting consumers to open the lid when there is still pressure trapped within the unit. This can result in hot food, liquid or steam exploding out, resulting in severe burn injuries.

About a month after her lawsuit was filed, Sensio recalled about 860,000 pressure cookers after 61 reports of people who were burned when they opened the lid. The recall involves Bella, Bella Pro Series, Cooks, and Crux Electric and Stovetop Pressure Cookers.

In the recall notice, Sensio warned that the “lid can unlock and be removed during use, causing the hot contents to unexpectedly splash out, posing a burn hazard to consumers.”

The Bella Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed against Sensio Inc. (d/b/a Bella) on July 13, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York — Case 1:23-cv-06016.
