Bayer To Pay $10 Billion Settlement in Roundup Cancer Lawsuits

June 24, 2020 — Bayer announced that it will pay at least $10.1 billion to end the majority of 125,000 lawsuits claiming that Monsanto’s Roundup® weed-killer causes lymphoma.

The settlement will resolve about 95% of the current Roundup lawsuits for between $8.8 billion to $9.6 billion. It also includes $1.25 billion to resolve future lawsuits. The total payout could reach $10.9 billion.

Bayer did not admit wrongdoing. The company continues to insist that Roundup does not cause cancer. Furthermore, Bayer will continue to sell Roundup in the U.S. without cancer warning labels.

In addition to the Roundup settlement, Bayer also announced a $400 million settlement in “dicamba drift” crop damage lawsuits, plus another $820 million settlement for PCB water contamination lawsuits.

Those settlements will resolve the bulk of litigation Bayer inherited when it bought Monsanto for $63 billion in 2018.

That takeover came right before a jury in California awarded $280 million to a groundskeeper who developed lymphoma after using Roundup.

Last year, another California jury awarded $2 billion to a husband and wife who both developed cancer after using Roundup.
