Bad Boy Buggy Rollover Death LawsuitJanuary 12, 2016 — The death of a 14 year-old boy and a lawsuit filed by his family has triggered a recall of Bad Boy Buggies that do not have seat belts.

The recall was announced on January 11 by Textron Specialized Vehicles, the company that owns BB Buggies Inc. and Bad Boy Enterprises.

It involves about 1,100 of the battery-powered Bad Boy XTO and Bone Collector XTO off-road utility vehicles, sold from November 2010 through June 2013.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Cody Pike, a boy who died in a rollover accident in a Bad Boy XTO. He was ejected when the driver made a left-hand turn and crushed under the 1,700-pound vehicle. The incident occurred in Toombs County, Georgia, in 2014.

Another rollover accident seriously injured the leg of an adult man who was driving the Bad Boy XTO. The vehicles do not have doors, which makes it very easy for a driver to lose a leg in a rollover accident. Textron settled a lawsuit in 2013 involving a girl who had to have her leg amputated.

The original Bad Boy is essentially a golf cart that was converted to an off-road vehicle. Like a golf cart, some models do not have seat belts or doors — but the buggies are sold for off-roading rather than golfing.

The buggies have two bench seats (one forward-facing and one rear-facing) but no doors, netting, or seat belts to prevent occupants from being ejected and crushed under the vehicle in rollover accidents.

The recalled vehicles have serial numbers ranging from 8000020 through 8004934. The serial number is located on the steering column connected to the wheel.

Owners of the recalled buggies should contact Textron to schedule a free seat belt installation. For more information, call Textron at 855-738-3711 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or online at www.badboyoffroad.com and click on “Recall Information.”
