Baby Neck Floats Linked to Deadly Safety Hazards

June 30, 2022 — Baby neck floats have been linked to at least 1 death and another serious injury, according to a new Safety Warning from the FDA.

The FDA is concerned because some manufacturers are advertising baby neck floats as a safe way to build strength or motor skills.

In reality, the FDA has not approved any of these products for physical therapy, and they pose life-threatening safety hazards like drowning, suffocation, strains, and neck injuries.

The risk of injury or death is significantly higher for babies with special needs, like spina bifida or SMA type 1, according to the warning:

“The FDA is aware of one baby who died and one baby who was hospitalized related to the use of baby neck floats. In both cases the babies were injured when their caregivers were not directly monitoring them.”

Some of the safety hazards of baby neck floats include:

• Suffocation if baby’s mouth and nose are obstructed by the float
• Drowning if the baby slips out of the float
• Breathing may stop, or blood circulation in the neck may be compressed if the float is too tight
• Babies can tip over and drown if there are other children in the water creating waves
