Baby Bathers Recalled for Infant Skull Fracture Injuries

September 4, 2012 — Summer Infant, Inc. and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have issued an immediate recall of the Mother’s Touch Deluxe Baby Bather. The recall involves approximately 2 million products sold in the United States. At least seven infants have suffered severe head injuries when the seats were lifted with a child inside. A manufacturing defect with the hinge can allow the seat to tip backward, potentially dropping the infant from the seat.

The CPSC is aware of seven incidents that have occurred in the U.S., including five incidents that involved serious head injuries. Four out of the five babies had skull fractures and involved infants between 2 weeks and 4 months old. One child had severe bleeding in the brain and required intensive emergency treatment. The fifth infant had a bump on the head and was taken to the emergency room for treatment.

The manufacturer of the bathing seat is warning that the folding wire frame can detach from the side hinge. The seats have adjustable side hinges, which allow the seat to be placed in several positions, but unfortunately there is no locking mechanism. If the seat suddenly disengages, infants who fall out may suffer severe head injuries. These injuries have occurred despite a small-print warning, which has been on the products since July 2007 and warned: “Never lift or carry the bather with the baby in it.”

The Baby Bathers are made in China, come in many different colors and prints, and have been sold online or in major retail stores from September 2004 through November 2011. Each product cost about $15-30.

The CPSC and Summer Infant are asking customers to immediately stop using the products. Customers can contact Summer Infant directly and order a repair kit, which will include instructions on how to install a locking strap.

Because approximately 65,000 of the Baby Bathers were sold in Canada, Health Canada has also published a press release announcing the recall.
