June 12, 2014 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to buy or use B-Perfect, a weight-loss supplement, because it contains sibutramine and phenolphthalein.
These hidden pharmaceutical ingredients are not listed on the label. They are not allowed in any prescription medications or dietary supplements on the market in the United States. Products that contain these ingredients are adulterated and illegal to sell.
Laboratory analysis from the FDA discovered that B-Perfect contains sibutramine, an appetite-suppressant that was originally called Meridia. It was pulled off the market in October 2010 after studies showed that it could increase the risk of heart problems, especially for people with risk-factors for heart attack and stroke.
The FDA also found that B-Perfect contains phenolphthalein, a laxative that was available over-the-counter in products like Ex-Lax since the early 1900s. It was pulled off the market in the late 1990s after studies in rodents showed a wide range of carcinogenic (cancer-causing) effects.
Consumers who use B-Perfect put themselves at risk of life-threatening side effects. According to the FDA:
“The product poses a threat to consumers because sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. These products may also interact, in life-threatening ways, with other medications a consumer may be taking.”
