August 13, 2014 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a recall for 15,306 pounds of frozen, fully-cooked chicken nuggets from Applegate Naturals because they may be contaminated with small pieces of plastic.
Products included in the recall:
- 8-oz. box of “APPLEGATE naturals CHICKEN NUGGETS” bearing the establishment number “P2617” and the “BEST BEFORE” date of “02/05/15”. The product was produced on Feb. 5, 2014, with a sell by date of Feb. 5, 2015 and bear the establishment number “P2617” inside the USDA Mark of Inspection.
The recall was issued in response to customer complaints about plastic pieces in the chicken nuggets. There have been no reports of injury. The USDA has classified the recall as Class II, meaning the agency believes there is a low health risk.
The manufacturer, Applegate, withdrew the products from the market on August 8. However, because this is a frozen food product, it is possible that consumers still have it in their freezers.
Tyson Chicken Nugget Recall
This is not the first time chicken nuggets have been recalled for foreign plastic matter. In April 2014, Tyson Foods recalled over 75,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets after some consumers were injured by sharp pieces of plastic in the food. The problem was traced to a “product scraper” inside of the company’s blending machines. Some consumers reported minor injuries to their mouths.
