March 12, 2019 — State agencies and oil companies in Alaska are investigating the death of an oilfield worker who was reportedly struck by a pipe.
The victim’s name has not been released because the family is still being notified.
The incident occurred at a North Slope oil field that was operated by Hilcorp Alaska, according to a state official.
Hilcorp Alaska has previously come under investigation for multiple safety violations. The worker was employed by Kuukpik Drilling.
Alaska state officials said the fatality occurred at 3 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2019.
Dave Wilkins, senior vice president of Hilcorp Alaska, said the death resulted from a “pipe mishandling incident” on the rig floor.
The worker was struck and killed by heavy drilling pipe. They were laying down pipe, which requires sections of pipe to be moved.
Hilcorp spokeswoman Lori Nelson provided a statement that said “the cause of the incident is not known.”
