April 16, 2014 — Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is facing a blistering social media campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of vaginal mesh and hold the company accountable for a “pattern of reckless conduct that has seriously injured women across the United States who have been implanted with the corporation’s pelvic mesh products.”
The Corporate Action Network (CAN), a consumer watchdog group, is calling for two criminal investigations:
- destruction of thousands of documents critical in the vaginal mesh litigation
- obstruction of a criminal investigation into healthcare offenses.
U.S. District Judge Joseph Goodwin, who is presiding over nearly 15,000 lawsuits in federal court, says the destruction of documents was negligent but does not appear to be a case of willful destruction in an attempt to conceal evidence.
The CAN is also warning shareholders to “think twice” about investing in the company. The group has set up a website, www.johnsonandjohnsonhurtswomen.org with a confidential form for whistleblowers to submit tips. The website has a countdown to April 24, when the group promises to reveal new information involving alleged corporate abuses against women.
J&J and its Ethicon unit are facing more than 20,000 vaginal mesh lawsuits from women who allege that they suffered debilitating injuries. The FDA has warned that serious complications are “not rare” and commonly include erosion of the mesh through the vaginal wall. This devastating complication can cause infection, scarring, chronic pain, inability to have sexual intercourse, and require multiple revision surgeries.
