What is Byetta?
Byetta (exenatide) is a new type of treatment for Type-2 diabetes that was approved by the FDA in 2005 (the extended-release version of Byetta, Bydureon, was approved in 2012). Byetta was developed by two pharmaceutical companies, Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Eli Lilly & Co. When Byetta is used in combination with diet and exercise, it can help a people with Type-2 diabetes control their blood-sugar levels.
How Does Byetta Work?
The active compound in Byetta is a synthetic hormone called extendin-4, which treats diabetes by stimulating the pancreas to produce extra insulin. Interestingly, extendin-4 was developed from a compound found in a venomous saliva of a large lizard called a Gila monster, native to the American Southwest. It works by mimicking the action of the hormone GLP-1, which the gut normally uses to trigger insulin production after a meal. Byetta also decreases appetite and cravings for food, which can help with weight loss.
