UPDATE: 10 Deaths Linked to Boppy Newborn Lounger

In June 2023, safety officials warned parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the Boppy Newborn Lounger after at least 10 babies suffocated to death since 2015.

The Boppy Company recalled 3.3 million Boppy Newborn Loungers in 2021 after reports of 8 babies who suffocated to death. Tragically, two more babies died soon after the recall was announced:

  • October 2021: A baby was placed on a Boppy Newborn Lounger for sleep and died after rolling under an adult pillow that was nearby.
  • November 2021: A baby was put on a Boppy Newborn Lounger to sleep in an adult bed, with a parent and soft bedding nearby. The baby was found deceased on top of the Boppy. The cause of death was not determined.

What is the problem?

Boppy® is a type of infant lounging pillow or pad. It is not advertised for sleep, but instead to help infants sit or rest while awake. The problem is that babies have suffocated to death when they were left unattended or allowed to sleep in the product.

What is the Risk?

Babies can roll over and suffocate to death when their face is pressed into the soft fabric. There is also a risk that the baby’s head can fall into a dangerous position (such as their chin touching their chest), which can block their airway and quickly lead to suffocation and death.

Boppy Recalled Due to Risk of Suffocation & Death

In September 2021, The Boppy Co. recalled around 3.3 million Boppy® Newborn Loungers due to a risk of suffocation and death.

The recall involves the following Boppy products:

  • Boppy Original Newborn Lounger
  • Boppy Preferred Newborn Lounger
  • Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Lounger

The recalled Boppy Newborn Loungers were sold nationwide between January 2004 and September 2021 at stores like Amazon, Pottery Barn Kids, Target, Walmart, and more.

How Many Babies Died?

At total of 10 infant deaths have been linked to the Boppy Newborn Lounger. At least 8 babies died when they were placed on the Boppy on their back, side or stomach between December 2015 and June 2020, according to the CPSC. Two additional deaths were reported in November and December 2021.

Baby Lounging Pillows Linked to 28 Deaths — Consumer Reports

Just before 3.3 million Boppy Newborn Loungers were recalled, Consumer Reports issued a safety warning after finding at least 28 deaths linked to nursing pillows and baby loungers, including 7 deaths involving Boppy Newborn Loungers.

Boppy Recalls Infant Head and Neck Supports

Boppy Newborn Loungers are not the only products recalled by The Boppy Company. Back in July 2019, around 14,000 Boppy Infant Head and Neck Support Accessories were also recalled because babies can suffocate to death.

The recall was issued after 3 reports of babies whose heads were pushed too far forward (with their chin touching their chest) because the pillow was overstuffed. No injuries were reported, but the chin-to-chest position can block a baby’s airway and cause them to suffocate.

The recalled Boppy Head and Neck Supports were sold in two styles: Ebony Floral and Heathered Gray (Model #4150114 and #4150117).
