January 27, 2025 — A jury in Colorado has awarded over $55 million to a woman who was severely burned by a now-recalled Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker that “violently exploded.”

The jury awarded $55.5 million and found the Crock-Pot manufacturers to be 90% responsible for causing her injuries. She was found to be 10% responsible, which will reduce the award.

The case involved a woman named Georgina P. who suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns, required extensive medical treatment, and still suffers from scarring and other complications from her severe burns.

She was burned by a Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-Cooker (Model Number SCCPPC600V1), which was recalled by Sunbeam Products and its parent company Newell Brands in November 2020.

According to the lawsuit, she was using the Crock-Pot to cook beans using the pressure cooking feature of the multi-cooker. About 20 minutes after the beans were done cooking, she went to open the steam-release valve — but as soon as she touched the lid, the Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker ejected burning-hot beans and liquid onto her body:

“The moment Plaintiff made contact with the Subject Multi-Cooker, it violently exploded, sending scalding hot beans and liquid into Plaintiff’s face and chest, the ceiling, and the surrounding kitchen.”

Her lawsuit describes the excruciating medical treatment she endured, including hospitalization with 8 skin grafts on her face and 13 skin grafts on her body, for a total of 5.3 square feet of skin grafts.

She still has long-term complications like scarring, disfigurement, skin discoloration, itching, tingling and numbness in her lips, and trouble regulating her body temperature due to burned sweat glands.

Her lawsuit blames Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands for selling a dangerously defective pressure cooker that can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked, despite aggressive advertisements about safety.

Her lawsuit was filed against Target Corporation, Sunbeam Products, and Newell Brands on June 15, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado — Case 1:21-cv-01915.
