If you were injured by an IVC Filter side effect, fracture, or retrieval, contact our Texas lawyers for lawsuit info at (866) 879-3040.July 17, 2017 — Over 4,500 federal IVC Filter lawsuits have been filed against Cook Medical and C.R. Bard, according to the latest update from the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation.

C.R. Bard is facing 2,213 lawsuits involving IVC Filters such as the Recovery® or G2®, which multiple studies estimate will fracture in approximately 40% of patients within 5 years.

The lawsuits are centralized under U.S. District Judge David Campbell in Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2641) in federal court in Arizona.

Cook Medical is facing 2,342 lawsuits involving IVC Filters such as the Günther Tulip® and Celect®, which studies have linked to high rates of tilting and vein perforation in the first few months of implantation.

The lawsuits are centralized under U.S. District Judge Richard Young in MDL No. 2570 in federal court in the Southern District of Illinois.

There are also a growing number of IVC Filter lawsuits against other manufacturers, such as B. Braun, Rex Medical, and Argon Medical.

Studies show that IVC Filters may be over-used in patients who do not actually need them, and the filters are not always removed after they are no longer necessary, according to research published in the Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis. According to Dr. Mitchel Seleznick:

“All of the findings point to the possibility of undue safety risks among patients who are prescribed IVC filters”

IVC Filters are only recommended for patients who are at risk of blood clots but can’t take a blood-thinning medication, but the study found higher rates of blood-thinner use in patients who had an IVC Filter. The study also found that patients who received IVC Filters had higher rates of hospitalization and re-admission than patients without a filter.
