March 25, 2024 — Nestlé USA recalled 440,500 metallic Starbucks mug that were sold with several 2023 Holiday Gift Sets.
The problem is that the mugs can overheat or break if they are microwaved or filled with extremely hot liquids.
There were 12 incidents reported where the mugs got extremely hot or broke, including 10 people who were injured. Nine of those injuries were severe, and involved blisters on the fingers or hands.
One person suffered a cut on their finger when the mug suddenly broke. One injured person required medical attention, according to the recall.
The recalled mugs were sold in 11 oz. and 16 oz. sizes as part of one of the following gift sets sold during the 2023 holiday season:
- Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs
- Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug
- Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug
- Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug
The recalled mugs were sold nationwide online and in-store at Target and Walmart, and through Nexcom (military retail outlets) from November 2023 through January 2024.
