340,000 Honda Portable Generators Recalled for Fire Risk

March 18, 2020 — Honda is recalling 340,000 portable generators after 10 fires were reported and two separate defects that pose a fire hazard.

Honda recalled the EB2200i, EU2200i, EU2200i Companion and EU2200i Camo portable generators.

In March 2019, about 200,000 of the generators were previously recalled because gasoline can leak from the fuel valve.

Now, those generators are being recalled again, plus another 140,000 due to another fire hazard. The problem is that a short-circuit can occur in the generator’s inverter assembly while it is in use.

This short-circuit occurs in the presence of salt-water and causes the generator to smoke or catch on fire. Honda reported 10 fires, but no injuries or property damage.

The recalled Honda portable generators were sold at Home Depot, other home improvement stores nationwide, authorized Honda Power Equipment Dealers, and online from February 2018 through January 2020 for between $1,100 and $1,300.
