September 2, 2020 — Over $100 million in lawsuits were filed after 4 men died when a dredging ship hit an underwater gas pipeline in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The pipeline explosion occurred when the dredging vessel Waymon L Boyd hit an underwater natural gas pipeline on the morning of August 21, which set off a massive explosion that sunk the vessel.
The vessel had a crew of 19 people aboard. Four men died in the accident and 15 others were injured. The crew was from the Houston area or nearby.
Lawsuits were quickly filed against Orion Marine Construction, the Washington-based company that owns the Waymon Boyd.
The surviving family members of two men who died have each filed lawsuits seeking at least $50 million in damages. Another $10 million lawsuit was filed by an injured man who survived the explosion.
The lawsuits claim there were no visual markers along the Inner Harbor to warn that a pipeline was in the path of the dredging vessel. An investigation into exactly what caused the incident could take several months.
