1 Million Trek Bicycles Recalled After 3 Serious Injuries

April 23, 2015 — Trek Bicycles is recalling nearly 1 million bikes after three people were injured and one paralyzed when the “quick-release” lever on the front wheel hit the disc brakes and caused the wheel to suddenly stop turning.

The recall announcement from the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) described the problem as follows:

“An open quick release lever on the bicycle’s front wheel hub can come into contact with the front disc brake assembly, causing the front wheel to come to a sudden stop or separate from the bicycle, posing a risk of injury to the rider.”

Trek reported three people who suffered the following injuries:

• Quadriplegia (paralysis of both arms and legs)
• Facial injuries
• Fractured wrist

The recall involves Trek bicycles from model-years 2000-2015 equipped with front disc brakes and a black or silver quick-release lever on the front wheel hub that opens far enough to contact the disc brake.

The bikes were sold nationwide from about September 1999 through April 2015 for between $480 and $1,650. About 900,000 were sold in the United States, and 98,000 in Canada.

Bikes with front quick release levers that do not open a full 180º are not included in the recall.

Trek asks consumers to stop using the bikes immediately and contact an authorized retailer to install a free replacement “quick-release” lever on the front wheel. Trek will also provide a $20 coupon for any Bontrager merchandise, redeemable by December 31, 2015.
