1.3 Million Dishwashers Recalled for Fire Hazard

August 9, 2012 — GE Appliances has issued voluntary recall of 1.3 million dishwashers due to the risk of electrical fire in the heating element. No injuries have been reported, but the dishwashers have been linked to at least 15 fires. Three of the fires were responsible for extensive property damage. GE and the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) are recommending that people who have the dishwashers should immediately stop using the products.

The following dishwasher brand-names are being recalled:

• GE
• GE Adora
• GE Eterna
• GE Profile
• Hotpoint Dishwashers

The dishwashers were sold for $350-850 at major retailers in the United States from March 2006 until August 2009. They came in a variety of colors — including white, bisque, stainless steel, and “CleanSteel.”

Consumers can identify the model and serial number on a metallic plate located inside the dishwasher, on the front left side of the tub. It is visible when the door is opened.

GE and the CPSC are asking customers who own the dishwashers to stop using it, turn off the circuit breaker that provides electricity to the dishwasher, and tell everyone who uses the dishwasher that it should not be used due to the risk of fire.

Customers should not return their defective dishwashers to the retail store where the product was purchased. The stores are not equipped to handle the recall, they will not accept the dishwashers, and they cannot offer compensation. Instead, customers should contact GE to receive a free in-home repair kit, or a $75-100 rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher.

The CPSC also warned that consumers should not resell the dishwasher or attempt to resell it, because it is illegal to resell a product that has been recalled.
