Wegmans Walnuts Recalled for Salmonella Risk

March 20, 2015 — A recall has been issued for Wegmans Organic Walnut Halves & Pieces because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recalled walnuts were sold in 6oz clear plastic tubs. They were distributed to 85 grocery stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts and sold between January 27, 2015 and March 17, 2015. The UPC code on the product is 077890358009.

No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall.

Wegmans initiated that recall after the FDA received a report of a positive Salmonella test in specific grower lots of organic walnuts.

Earlier this week, Trader Joe’s recalled raw California walnuts after the FDA discovered Salmonella contamination during routing screening. No illnesses have been linked to the products, but they have been pulled off store shelves pending an investigation into the source of the contamination.

Healthy adults who are infected by Salmonella typically experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain for 4 to 7 days. While most people recover without needing treatment, the infection can be deadly — especially for young children, older adults, and people with compromised immune systems.

The FDA has also warned about severe complications:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
