March 24, 2017 — Vecaro LifeStyle hoverboards were recalled after at least 3 reports of the batteries overheating and smoking. No injures or property damage were reported.
The recall involves about 600 of the following types of hoverboards:
- Verona Glide65
The hoverboards had the word “Vecaro” printed on the front of the outside case. They were sold in black, white, red, blue, metallic gold, metallic silver, graffiti white print, and red flame print.
They were sold at The Audio Shop and Stereo Xone in California, and online at VecaroLifestyle.com, between November 2015 and November 2016 for round $400.
Consumers should immediately stop using the hoverboards and contact Vecaro for a free repair or a credit toward the purchase of a UL 2272 Vecaro Glide or Glide-X.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall just days after Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle opened a priority investigation into a hoverboard fire that caused the deaths two girls in Pennsylvania.
There is no word on what type of hoverboard sparked the fire that resulted in their deaths. The hoverboard was charging by the front door of a row house in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, when it caught on fire.
Ashanti Hughes, 3, and Savannah Dominick, 10, died of burn injuries in the tragic incident. A firefighter who was responding to the fire also died of injuries he suffered in a car accident with an impaired driver.
The CPSC is urging consumers who own a hoverboard to check if it is on the list of recalls.
Over 500,000 hoverboards were recalled in 2016. There have been nearly 100 reports of the lithium-ion batteries overheating, smoking, catching on fire, or exploding. The CPSC has investigated at least 60 fires.
