V26 Slimming Coffee Contains Hidden Sibutramine

November 5, 2014 — The FDA is warning consumers not to purchase or use V26 Slimming Coffee because it contains sibutramine, a dangerous appetite-suppressant drug.

The label on V26 Slimming Coffee did not include sibutramine. The hidden ingredient was discovered through FDA laboratory analysis. V26 Slimming Coffee is a dietary supplement that is marketed for weight loss on various websites and in some stores.

Last year, health officials in Hong Kong issued a similar safety warning for “Aisiyuan V26 Coffee Slimming granules” because it contained sibutramine.

They reported a 42 year-old woman who consumed the product was hospitalized for 9 days in April 2013 after losing consciousness. Sibutramine metabolites were detected in her urine sample. Sibutramine was also found in a product sample. Investigation revealed that her friend purchased the product over the internet.

Sibutramine was originally a prescription appetite-suppressing drug called Meridia that was marketed for the treatment of obesity. The FDA withdrew sibutramine from the market in October 2010 due to concern about cardiovascular side effects. The SCOUT clinical trial linked it to a 16% increased risk of head attack, stroke, and death compared to a placebo. Sibutramine can also interact with other medications a person is taking.

According to the FDA:

“Sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke.”
