June 9, 2017 — A woman from Dallas, Texas who was paralyzed in a car accident while riding in an Uber has filed a lawsuit against the company for failing to adequately vet its drivers.
The lawsuit was filed by Sarah Milburn, a 24 year-old college student who through she was doing the right thing by taking an Uber home after a night out in Uptown Dallas with her friends for a birthday.
Instead, she nearly died on the way home when her driver, Anan Yusufzai, sped his Honda Odyssey through a red light at a busy intersection and was T-boned by a Ford F-150 pickup truck.
Sarah survived the devastating car accident. Rescue workers pulled her out of the back of the vehicle and rushed her to the ICU at Baylor University Medical Center. Tragically, her spine was crushed and she was permanently paralyzed from the chest down. She says:
“It could have been anyone. Millions of people trust Uber with their lives, and they obviously aren’t doing it the right way.”
In January 2017, she filed a lawsuit against Uber Technologies, Honda, the Uber driver, and the owner of the Honda. Investigators say the driver had a criminal history and the vehicle was not insured. Her lawyers accuse Uber of negligence for hiring dangerous drivers.
