The manufacturer of Tribenzor, Daiichi Sankyo, is facing a growing number of lawsuits from people who suffered from chronic diarrhea, weight-loss, and sprue-like enteropathy. Although diarrhea usually ends when a patient stops taking Tribenzor, chronic diarrhea can cause devastating health problems.

Tribenzor and Diarrhea
Tribenzor contains a combination of olmesartan, amlopidine, and hydrochlorothiazide. The first two drugs treat high blood pressure, and the third drug is a diuretic (“water pill”) that helps prevent swelling in the legs due to excess fluid in the body.
Unfortunately, olmesartan has been associated with a severe intestinal disease known as sprue-like enteropathy, which causes chronic diarrhea and substantial weight-loss. Although patients usually get better when they switch to another blood pressure drug, some patients on olmesartan were misdiagnosed for years and developed long-term complications.
Chronic diarrhea is a debilitating medical problem that can make it impossible to lead a normal life. Lawsuits have been filed by patients on olmesartan who had chronic diarrhea for years, resulting in permanent complications.
Over time, diarrhea can lead to severe malnutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, dehydration, organ damage, and kidney failure. One of the most serious complications, intestinal villous atrophy, occurs when the lining of the intestines is destroyed.
What is the problem?
The problem is that diarrhea typically does not begin until a patient has been on Tribenzor for several months or years. When symptoms do appear, they may resemble Celiac disease (gluten intolerance). Some patients were misdiagnosed for years.
Signs & symptoms may include:
- Bowel movements that are frequent and watery
- Abdominal pain or cramps
- Occasional vomiting
- Malnutrition (vitamin and mineral deficiency)
- And more
FDA Updates Label on Tribenzor to Include Diarrhea
The label on Tribenzor was not updated to include chronic diarrhea until July 2013, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned about “clear evidence” linking olmesartan with 23 cases of sprue-like enteropathy.
“Tell your patients to contact you if they develop severe, chronic diarrhea with substantial weight loss while taking an olmesartan-containing product, even if it takes months to years for symptoms to develop.”
