Zydelig and Infections

In March 2016, Gilead Sciences stopped six clinical trials investigating Zydelig as a first-line treatment for three types of blood cancer after several patient deaths. Zydelig is not approved as a first-line treatment for cancer.

European health officials recommended new safety measures, including close monitoring and antibiotics to prevent pneumonia. Investigators warned about a particular type of lung infection (Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia). It is caused by a fungus commonly found in the environment.

Antibiotics and corticosteroids can treat pneumonia, but severe infections can cause respiratory failure or even death. Symptoms of Pneumocystis pneumonia include:

  • Cough, often mild and dry
  • Fever
  • Rapid breathing
  • Shortness of breath, especially with activity (exertion)

Zydelig was also associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections. The virus spreads through close contact with body fluids. Between 50-80% of people over 40 are infected with CMV, but it rarely causes symptoms in healthy adults. Symptoms may include:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling generally sick and tired (malaise)
  • Muscle aches
  • Rash
  • Sore throat

What is the problem?

The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but our lawyers are not filing a Zydelig class action. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits against Gilead Sciences on behalf of people who died or were seriously injured by infections and other side effects.

About Class Actions

Class actions are ideal when a lot of people have similar legal claims, especially when they are seeking reimbursement for purchasing a product based on false claims. If compensation is awarded, everyone in the class action shares it equally.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

For people with severe injuries, class actions can have disadvantages. Members may have to accept a “low-ball” settlement or higher attorneys’ fees. Class actions are designed to maximize efficiency — not compensation for injured plaintiffs.

Instead of a class action, our lawyers file individual lawsuits. We focus on helping our clients file lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies that fail to warn about side effects. If you or a loved one was injured by Zydelig, you could be entitled to compensation.
