Yasmin birth control pills can cause life-threatening or deadly heart attacks. Yasmin contains drospirenone, a hormone that the FDA warns may triple a woman’s risk of a blood clot. Blood clots can travel in the bloodstream and become trapped in the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart. Without blood, the heart tissue can become severely damaged.

Yasmin is a birth control pill that is sold by Bayer, a giant drug company. Yasmin was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001. It was the first birth control on the market that contained drospirenone, a newly-invented kind of synthetic progestin.
To convert women from older birth control pills to Yasmin, Bayer marketed Yasmin with an advertising campaign that the FDA later called “misleading.” The ad campaign implied that Yasmin was superior to older types of birth control pills, but they failed to include any risk information.
By the time researchers conducted studies linking Yasmin to a tripled risk of blood clots, millions of women had used Yasmin, and thousands had been injured. In April 2012, the FDA finally made it official: They announced that the warning labels on Yasmin (and all drospirenone-containing birth control pills) would be updated to inform women about the risk of blood clots.
Yasmin and Heart Attacks
All progestin-containing hormonal birth control pills increase a woman’s risk of a heart attack. Some synthetic versions of progestin may raise this risk more than others. Yasmin birth control contains drospirenone, an ingredient that the FDA now warns has been associated with a tripled risk of blood clots. In some women, these blood clots form deep inside the body. If they break loose, they may travel until they get trapped in a smaller blood vessel inside a major internal organ.
A heart attack (or “myocardial infarction”) occurs when a blood clot blocks a coronary artery. The heart muscle receives oxygen-rich blood from three coronary arteries. If one of these arteries is clogged by a blood clot, the heart is unable to receive an adequate supply of oxygen. Within minutes, heart tissue begins to die.
Though some people recover from a heart attack within a few weeks, damage to the heart is irreversible. If the damage is severe enough, a heart attack can cause heart failure. Symptoms of heart failure usually include faintness, shortness of breath, and swelling of the legs. These symptoms may grow gradually worse over time, leading to death.
Symptoms of a Yasmin Heart Attack
Early treatment of a heart attack is essential to survival. However, many people decide to delay seeking treatment because the early symptoms are often mild, and they think they can “tough it out.” This reduces the likelihood of survival.
The symptoms of a heart attack vary widely in severity. They may resemble mild indigestion, or they may be sudden and extremely painful. Sometimes, mild chest pain (called angina) develops over the course of several days. Other times, heart attacks occur with no warning.
Symptoms of a Yasmin heart attack may include:
- Chest pain: This chest pain may occur suddenly or gradually, and it may be severe or mild at first. Early chest pain may resemble a feeling of tightness, pressure, or fullness in the chest. The pain may spread out and affect the shoulder, arm, back, or other parts of the body.
- Abdominal pain: In the upper abdomen
- Feeling short of breath for no apparent reason
- Anxiety, tension, feeling like something is seriously wrong
- Feeling light-headed, faint, dizzy
