If you had a baby with a birth defect after taking the antidepressant Wellbutrin during pregnancy, you may have a legal claim against the manufacturer. Studies have linked Wellbutrin with higher rates of heart defect and other birth complications.

Wellbutrin and Birth Defects
Wellbutrin (buproprion) is an antidepressant medication manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). It belongs to the aminoketone class of antidepressants, which are mild stimulants and treat depression by increasing norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain.
During pregnancy, Wellbutrin is known to pass through the placenta. However, no one knows if it causes birth defects. The FDA classifies it as a Pregnancy Category C, meaning that studies in humans are inconclusive.
According to the prescribing information, a study of 1,200 babies exposed to Wellbutrin in the first trimester found no evidence of fetal harm. However, pregnant animals who were given low doses (equivalent to what a human would take) had more babies with skeletal malformations and other birth defects.
In 2010, the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology published a study that found a 2.6-fold increased risk of heart defects affecting the left-outflow tract in babies exposed to Wellbutrin in early pregnancy. However, researchers cautioned that the increased risk was small and more studies were needed.
What is the problem?
The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but our attorneys are not filing a Wellbutrin class action at this time. Instead, we are focusing our efforts on maximizing each client’s financial recovery through individual lawsuits. In addition, we are only accepting claims involving the most serious injuries and birth defects associated with Wellbutrin.
About Class Actions
When most people think about complex litigation against a major pharmaceutical company, they think about class actions. However, class actions can actually have serious disadvantages — especially for people with very serious injuries, or children with birth defects. Plaintiffs may have to accept higher attorneys’ fees or a “low-ball” settlement, all without ever seeing their case taken to trial.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Wellbutrin Class Action
Our trial attorneys file individual lawsuits because we believe this is the best way we can advocate for each client. Thousands of children have been born with birth defects after they were exposed to antidepressants, and hundreds of cases have been centralized in federal court. Most of these cases are not part of class actions — they are individual lawsuits filed by people who hired an attorney to represent their legal and financial interests.
