Viread Class Action Lawsuit Filed in California
In May 2018, Gilead Sciences was hit with a class action lawsuit in California on behalf of everyone who took Viread and other HIV medications that contain Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF).
What is TDF?
TDF is an old version of an anti-viral medication called Tenofovir. The problem is that TDF must be taken at high doses, which is more likely to cause kidney damage, dental problems, or bone thinning (osteoporosis). As a result, Gilead Sciences recently developed a safer low-dose version of Tenofovir called TAF (Tenofovir Alafenamide).
Did Gilead Delay Selling Safer HIV Drugs?
Lawsuits against Gilead Sciences accuse the drug-maker of intentionally delaying development of TAF to maximize profits on TDF medications, including Viread. As a result, many patients who took Viread developed side effects in their bones, kidneys, or teeth.
For example, one lawsuit claims that Gilead knew as far back as 2001 that TSF was “…highly toxic in the doses prescribed and risked permanent and possibly fatal damage to the kidneys and bones.”
What is the problem?
The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm in Texas, but our lawyers are not currently filing a Viread class action lawsuit. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits for people who developed severe bone, kidney, or dental side effects of Viread.

About Class Actions
Most class action lawsuits are filed on behalf of a lot of people (or “class”) with relatively similar legal claims. Everyone who joins in the class action gets to share the payout equally. This can have disadvantages when one plaintiff has far more serious injuries than everyone else, which is why class action are rarely use for personal injury lawsuits involving medications like Viread.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action
Our law firm holds drug-makers accountable for failing to warn about side effects of their medications. If you were injured by Viread, you could be eligible to file a lawsuit and seek compensation for your pain and suffering, permanent injuries, medical expenses, and more.
