If you are a man who used the testosterone gel Testim and had a heart attack, stroke, or other serious side effect, you are not alone. An alarming study has revealed that older men on testosterone replacement therapy may be twice as likely to have a heart attack and 30% more likely to die from a cardiovascular event during the first 90 days of treatment.

What is Testim?
Testim, manufactured by Auxillium Pharmaceuticals, is a topical testosterone gel that is applied to the skin. It is marketed for the treatment of low testosterone, or “Low T,” with ads that promise it can cure problems like fatigue, sexual dysfunction, depressed mood, sagging muscles, and more.
What is the problem?
The problem is that recent studies indicate that Testim may have life-threatening cardiovascular side effects that outweigh the benefit of treating low testosterone. Another problem is that Testim is not a “quick fix” — because Testim causes the body to shut off its own testosterone, treatment becomes a lifetime commitment. Unfortunately, long-term side effects of testosterone are unknown.
Dr. Steve Nissen, Chief Cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, warns:
“What’s going on is a giant experiment with American men’s health at stake, because we don’t have the long-term data on the safety of these products.”
FDA Investigates Testim Safety Risks
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began investigating the cardiovascular risks of Testim in January 2014, shortly after PLoS One published a study of over 55,000 men found that testosterone may double the risk of cardiovascular events.
FDA Warnings for Testosterone Heart Attack, Stroke Risk
March 4, 2015 — In a Safety Communication, the FDA is asking manufacturers of testosterone replacement products to stop marketing them for the treatment of age-related “Low T,” add warnings about heart attacks and strokes, and start studying the long-term risks. Click here to read more.
Testim Lawsuit Filed by Heart Attack Victims
February 5, 2015 — A man who had a heart attack and stroke after taking Testim for less than one year has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer, Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, for failing to warn about the risk. Click here to read more.
April 14, 2014 — Auxilium is facing a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of a 61 year-old Louisiana man who died of a heart attack after using Testim for one year. Click here to read more.
Testim Side Effects
Like all testosterone treatment products, Testim can increase the number of red blood cells, which thickens the blood and elevates blood pressure. The Warnings & Precautions include warnings about blood clots in the legs, a condition known as “deep vein thrombosis.” The condition is life-threatening, because blood clots can obstruct blood vessels in vital organs and cause deadly complications.
Testim side effects may include:
- Blood clots
- Heart attack
- Pulmonary embolism
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Venous thromboembolism (VTE)
- Abnormal heart rhythm
- Organ damage
- And other serious side effects
