Sabra Hummus Recalled for Listeria Risk

November 19, 2016 — Sabra Dipping Co. has issued a recall a majority of its hummus with “Best-By” dates before January 23, 2017 because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Sabra hummus was previously recalled in April 2015 after a finished product tested positive for Listeria. There were no reports of illness. The problem was discovered by health officials in Michigan when a routine, random sample collected from a grocery store tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

Dozens of Swabs in Facility Tested Positive

In a Consumer Warning, the FDA said 27 swabs tested positive for disease-causing Listeria monocytogenes after recent inspections of Sabra’s facility in Colonial Heights, Virginia — 9 swabs from food processing areas, and 18 swabs near food handling equipment.

Listeria Strain Matches One Found Last Year

One of the swabs had a stain of Listeria that matched the strain found in a sample of Sabra Classic Hummus last year, resulting in another recall in April 2015. The findings suggest that Listeria “may be persistent in the production environment,” the FDA said.

Finished Products Tested “Every 2 Minutes”

Listeria was found in the facility, but not in finished products that were tested. Sabra said the FDA was “expanding their criteria for recalls to include presence of contaminants in the general environment.”

Sabra said their hummus undergoes “extensive finished product testing,” which includes testing finished products from the production line every 2 minutes for pathogens, including Listeria.

Rapid tests can identify Listeria in finished products within 24 hours, but there are many species of Listeria and most do not cause illness. It takes up to 5 days to confirm if it is the disease-causing species Listeria monocytogenes. Not all manufacturers conduct this secondary testing, especially on equipment in facilities.

What is the problem?

Sabra said it has cleaned the facility and is investigating what else it can do to improve food safety. Once established, Listeria is nearly impossible to eradicate from food processing facilities. It grows slowly and thrives in cold, wet crevices that are commonly found on equipment.

What is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal food poisoning. It is relatively rare, but has a high mortality-rate — up to 40% in some outbreaks. It is highly-invasive often causes bloodstream infections or meningitis. According to the FDA:

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

What Hummus Was Recalled?

The recalled hummus has “Best By” dates up to and including January 23, 2017. The date is printed on the lid of each package. The recall does NOT include Organic Hummus, Sabra Salsa, Sabra Guacamole, or Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips.
